Sussex Seniors started the defence of their South East league title with a fine 6 – 4 win away against Hampshire at Hayling Golf Club on Monday.
After 9 holes the match was evenly poised with Sussex ahead in 4 games, down in 4 games and level in 2. However at the beginning of the back nine the tide seemed to be turning the way of Hampshire as County stalwart Martin Galway was pulled back to level by his opponent and anchor man, Dean Manning, similarly lost his lead. Worryingly the experienced Andrew Smith and Steve Graham were also both down.
Gradually Sussex turned the match around as games reached the closing stretch. Sussex lead man, Mark Buss, remarkably came back from 3 down with 5 holes to play to halve his match and start to swing the momentum the way of Sussex; Andrew Smith also halved his match, before Arwell Roberts, Richard Allen, and Doug Park all gained valuable wins to put Sussex in command. Jim Banting had a run of single putts to edge ahead before he closed out his game with an outrageous long putt on 17th to leave Sussex on the brink. The winning point came from Irish International, Steve Graham, who closed out his match at 18th, a fitting way to celebrate his birthday!
The four counties in the South East league are very evenly matched, so an away win is a great start for the team.
The squad now looks forward to the 6 man team regional qualifying event in July, before the next County match against Kent at Worthing.
