Julian Deans - County Captain 2024

January 2024

This year marks the 125th anniversary of Sussex Golf, a milestone we're truly proud of. Sussex has been bestowed with the privilege of hosting the South East Regional 6-man tournament in July, a prestigious event in regional golf.

Taking the helm of the Sussex County 1st team in December, I am fully committed to elevating the squad to new heights in golf. The solid foundation I've inherited isn't lost on me; our team comprises players of varying ages, and the blend is crucial to our success.

As a single-figure handicap player myself, I appreciate the effort, desire, and commitment required to maintain and exceed our current levels. This year, I aim to rally support from the broader Sussex golfing community.

Regular updates on match dates will be posted on the website, and I encourage you to join us in supporting the team—we're in this together! I am deeply grateful for the backing from the Board, Sussex County Golf office, hosting Sussex clubs, and you, the members.

Please, come out and support us on match days. Feel free to approach me anytime; I'd be happy to discuss the squad and introduce you to the players hitting those impressive 300-yard drives down the fairway!

The third session of county training for the 1st team men's squad took place on Sunday, January 28th. This year, we're witnessing the formation of a truly formidable squad, characterized by genuine commitment and competitiveness throughout.

The day commenced with coaching by Steve Orr and Russ Evans at Rustington Golf Centre, both esteemed England golf coaches. Their expertise, whether in refining individual swings or enhancing mental fortitude, is invaluable to the squad.

Following the morning session, we seized the opportunity to play 18 holes at nearby Littlehampton GC. Nine holes of foursome golf allowed us to test different pairings, followed by nine holes of singles match play. The weather was pleasant until the sun began to set, bringing a noticeable drop in temperature.

Looking ahead, our next session includes a warm-up match against the South East Regional squad at Pyecombe GC on February 25th.
