RECORD WIN FOR WORTHING IN TROPHY
Worthing's seventh win in the Sussex Inter-Club Matchplay
championship is a record since the competition began in 1971.
East Sussex National put up a brave defence of the
PAV Trophy but were powerless to prevent
Worthing winning their second title in three years.
Leading the foursomes 2½ -1½, Worthing went
from strength to strength with English
youth international Toby Tree dominating Haywards Heath.
A handsome tribute to Tree came from Derek Howe
who has run the East Sussex National team during their glory days.
"In 35 years I have been in golf management I have
never seen a better striker of the ball.
He twice drove the first green and in the afternoon was
out in 29 and six up after seven holes over Mark Budd.
We have no excuses, Worthing played very well."
Next May Howe, 69 retires as manager at ESN
having presided over a winning streak
highlighted by championships 2004, 2008 and 2010.
Like a good loser he took it on the chin as Worthing
romped to winning six matches on the bounce.
Graham Roberts, Worthing's team manager,
said: "They are a great bunch of lads.
After the champagne was trotted out by Haywards Heath GC
don't ask me what they got up to after that."
The Dyke maintained their good form beating
Crowborough Beacon 8.5-3.5 to win the Plate.
