It was another tough day for the Sussex Under 14s in a league match v Kentand Surrey. Played at a soggy Holtye Golf Club following heavy overnight rain, the opposing counties found no trouble in adapting to the conditions and Kentran out comfortable winners with Surrey 2nd and Sussex a distant third.

The difficulty for the home side started with the loss of Captain Cameron Henderson through injury and the knowledge that an already tough game was going to be tougher. The top order found the going very difficult with Kent playing particularly strongly. Only Nathan Longley managed to gather some points with a good win  against Surrey but after being one up with three to play, he slid to a disappointing defeat against his Kent opponent. With a mixture of good play from the other counties and their own average performances, the rest of the top order went pointless.

Fortunately for the overall team performance and the improvement in the points tally, the lower order all had tighter matches with 6 of the 10 going to the 18th green and Sussex gaining 6 points from them.

James Huggett put in a fighting performance not for the first time and lost both his matches on the last green to a birdie and a par and George Ounstead fought back from being some way behind after 9 holes to take both his matches to the 16th before losing out.

Lucas Durrant needed to get up and down for a par to win his match against Kent and did so and Harry Worner had to sink a 4ft putt on the last to halve his match withSurrey which he did. Good performances form both boys in their matches.

The undoubted Man of the Match for Sussex was Thomas Harrison as both his matches went to the 18th where his par secured one win and one half resulting in a personal score of 3 points. Thomas played the last four holes in level par to secure his points proving that par golf can be a winning formula.

The playing reserves had some fun at the end of the field which gave Joel Funnell a bit of experience at competitive league golf.
