On a very windy and undulating Farleigh Court in Surrey, on Monday 8th August 2011, the South East corner of England came together. Kent teased us, arriving with only minutes to spare, obviously choosing to warm up on route!!

A warm welcome was received from Farleigh, with our own starter, who enthused about the changes afoot with the course and the bottomless coffee and superb bacon rolls, started the day well.

The hosts did not make the best of starts, but Kent and Sussex were out of the blocks like Usain Bolt, with holes being exchanged early on. At lunch after 18 holes of Foursomes Sussex just had a narrow lead with 14 points, over Kent's 13 points and Surrey, who never really got going, with 3 points.

Memorable performances were from Nick Ward and Kyle Gaster who won both matches, Ben Johnson and Tony Clifford, Josh Glossop and James Leadbetter, who both beat Surrey and halved with Kent. The Sedlescombe pair of David Wicks and Steven Gibbs were very strong beating both Kent and Surrey.

Sussex Champion Ben Roberts and Matt Greenfield got to the 18th with both Counties but were unlucky to lose both on the last hole, so at lunch Sussex held a very small advantage over Kent with Surrey in unfamiliar territory a long way back!!

After a very good lunch the wind seemed to get up even more, so the afternoon became more difficult.

Kent had a second half like Manchester United, with some great early results, is Paul Cannons the Fergie of the South? But Covey has never needed a hairdryer, his hair is the best proffered lie in the South!!

After a great start from Kent, the Sussex middle order of Gibbs, Wicks and Gaster all gained maximum points to get Sussex back in the driving seat. James Leadbetter struggled in the windy conditions, but his under 18 debut was encouraging and I am sure he will find a good coach to perfect those knock down shots!!!

Matt Greenfield enthused over his new driver and did well to gain 3 valuable points with an amazing hole out on the 18th. Josh and Callun had a tremendous battle having both beaten Josh from Surrey early on, their match went to the 18th, with Callun just pinching it!!

Last out was our newly crowned Sussex Boys Champion, Ben Roberts, who was not having the best of days but dug in well to turn around a 2 hole deficit to go down 18 level with Kent, both having been soundly beaten by James from Surrey. With all officials and players nervously watching on, Henry caught the bunker with his approach leaving Ben to just hit the middle of the green, he then teased his manager putting his first putt 6ft long, but holed out for a par to cement a famous Sussex Win!!

We go again on Thursday in Middlesex with our next triangular with Essex, but a good start to a long week!

Boys Team Manager.
