As holders of the Sussex Salver, the 2011 competition between Sussex, Hampshire
and Surrey, Sussex hosted the event which took place at Ifield Golf Club on Sunday 19th June.

After a keenly contested competition, where many individual matches went to the 18th hole,
the result came down in favour of Surrey, with Hampshire 2nd and Sussex 3rd.

For Sussex Under 14s, the league and special challenge matches are proving to be tough
assignments with the other counties all having strong squads with many low single figure
handicap golfers in them. That Sussex compete well and in several cases win matches
against the odds is a tribute to the spirit and togetherness in the team where the pride in
wearing a Sussex shirt is obvious to all who watch. The match on Sunday was our third
league/challenge match this year and the encouraging element is that our points won is
increasing in each match showing that the tough experience is beginning to have
some benefit.

There were several excellent performances on Sunday and the highlights were:

Joe Morley and Laird Shepherd’s fine win over Surrey

Ally and Callum Strachan’s foursomes men of the match show with a win over
Hampshire and a half with Surrey

Man of the match in the singles had to be Dan Paton with crushing wins
over both Surrey and Hampshire. He played some outstanding golf in his two wins

Two more good wins for Ally and Callum in their matches with Hampshire

Fighting halves from Cameron Henderson, Laird, Sam Prince-Smith and
Gregor Macintosh which pushed us to our highest singles points score this year.

A final word of thanks to Ifield golf Club who provided a fine course giving
a great test to the boys and excellent food to finish off the day.
