After a very long week, I thought this would be a nice relaxed day to catch up and unwind, how wrong I was!!
My Thanks to Ian Jaggard for getting there nice and early, and starting negotiations!!
I managed to get the Girls down to one courtesy shot, only for Ian to tell me that one hole was a par 3 for men and par 4 for ladies, I could haggle no more!!
The Foursomes were very close with the Girls just sneaking a 3½ to 2½ lead at lunch. The first time they have lead in the afternoon!!!!!
Great performances from Ben Jones and Prateek, Tom Richardson and Jack Sutton, and from the Girls, Hope Beland and Maddy Man, Sophie Kennard and Lizzie Price and Amy Davey and Marina Holden. Adam & Hamish ground out a good half with Hannah Duval and Jelina Fernando, Sue was beside herself and milked the moment!!
The afternoon Singles started early with anticipation of the Red arrows I had arranged to do a fly past at exactly 7.00 to announce the result in the sky!! After 9 holes the girls were up in all but one match, the whole of mankind took a deep breath!!
After consultations with my mate Sir Alex, the half time team talk soon started to take effect as the Boys started believing, first time I have used a hairdryer ever!!! But the Boys stared to believe!!
Hope was too strong for our Boys champ Ben, but Ben Jones dug deep to beat Sarah Park, Dan Godin was 4 under par when he beat Hannah Duval 5 & 4, Adam Godfrey on his debut overturned a 3 hole deficit to win 2 & 1 against Sophie. Prateek did well to come from 3 down to gain a valuable half with Lizzie on the last and Tom Thurloway came back from 4 down to win 1 up on the 18th against Amber.
Jelina and Maddy were too strong for Tom and Hamish, so it was all square with 4 matches left on the course!! Sam and Cameron, Elodie-Jane and Amy, got to the 18th, but the gallery did not know the scores!!!
A very nervous, error strung last hole seemed to take for ever, but after holing out, Sam had beaten Elodie-Jane and Amy had beaten Cameron.
Match still all square!!
Holly had beaten an out of sorts Laird 8 & 6, so it was all down to Jack and Marina!!
After 17 holes the match was all square, Jack hit a big drive but slightly left, Marina found the long grass just short of the green. The whole team, it seemed, went to look for Jacks ball, the 5 minutes loomed, and still no sign!! Then like a heat seeking missile Sue found the ball in a hole!! But was it an Animal hole?
After thanking the opposition Manager for even finding the Ball, it was agreed that it was free drop, poor Marina had found an awful lie, with not a dropping or scrape in sight!! So after 2 shots Jack was just short of the green, but poor old Marina just managed to move it forward 10 yards!! The gallery held its breath, but Jack held his nerve to win the last and secure a famous half so the trophy was shared for the first time, a good omen for the year of the merger!!
After this match, the girls should find Counties week a walk in the park!!!
