The dawn of Sunday 26th June broke to clear skies, bright sun shine and a light breeze. Apparently, the first day like it at Hayling this year, and nothing like our practise day the day before! Perhaps that was why; once again we struggled at foursomes!

James Doswell made him self available at late notice after Jack Bartlett earned late entry into the British Open Qualifying. Teaming up for the first time with Haywards Heath’s Ali Dalgliesh, they gelled well to win 2 up. Sadly, that was the only good news of the morning with the other three matches losing comprehensively.

The Sussex men knew that if they were to gain anything from the day, they would have to come out firing on all cylinders. And boy did they!

In form Ali Dalgliesh was sent out first and drew a tough match against Hampshire’s experienced Martin Young. Ali’s golf was faultless and he ground out a fine 2 and 1 victory.

The experienced trio of James Doswell, Scott Nightingale and newly crowned County Champ Joe Doherty followed. Birdies where flying all over the place and as the games approached the turn we were level or up in all games.

James faced a back nine onslaught from his opponent Ryan Henley that eventually saw him lose 4 and 3. Scott then did what Scott does, another point for Sussex!

Good news then came from the back of the field.  Nevill’s Richard Fung-On was repeating his performance in the previous match against Surrey. He shook hands with his opponent again on the 13th and again was 5 under par!

Pyecombe’s Richie Farmer then beat Colin Walsh 2 and 1 to take the match to 5-4 in our favour. The taste of victory was in the air!

Bobby Jones once said “I never learned anything from a match I won”.

Well I guess the golfing God’s decided we needed to learn a little more!

Youngsters Sam Russell and Jamie Chapman were both beaten, which left Joe Doherty out on the course. Having been up all the way he suffered a recurrence of an old back injury on the 13th. Hanging on for grim death, his struggle became harder turning back into the wind, on the last couple of holes. Sadly his lead was eaten up on the 18th green, where a half meant we lost the match cruelly, 6.5 – 5.5. FOR THE SECOND MATCH IN AROW!

The lesson – learn how to play foursomes and we are the best!
