Congratulations and well done to the Sussex Seiors Team players. (Anup Vasant, 20th May 2011)
Another successful day for Sussex Seniors Team, maintaining their 100% record so far this season.
Ham Manor was in good condition but with the lack of rain the ground was fairly firm and the greens were quite quick and tricky putting a premium on putting. Doug Arnold was available to play and was first off with a usual dogged performance to win 3/2. David Blundell, playing his second match, in match 2 after being narrowly ahead after 9 had a good run on the back 9 to run out 5/4 winner. Mike Massie playing in match 3 was struggling off the tee and ultimately lost to a steady John Nash by 5/3. Dave Hicks playing fourth was 5 up at the turn and despite one or two wobbles run out a comfortable 4/2 victor. With 3 points on the board it looked promising although wins lower down the order were by no means certain. Peter Crowther had a tight game but with a birdie at the 18th managed to win 1 up. Peter Bradshaw, playing 6 in his first match, was narrowly behind after 9 and had a chance to win the 10th but 3 putted, lost a ball on 11 and lost 12 after his opponent chipped in and ultimately went down 4/3. Both Malcolm Stalker, playing 7, and Neville Hudson, playing 8, were ahead through 12 and despite one or two wobbles came back to both win by 3/2. That actually gave Sussex the 6 points necessary for victory but out on the course it was not known whether Peter Crowther had won his match or not, being all square playing 18. Bill Groombridge on his home course 3 up after 12 was only 1 up playing 17 and we felt we needed the point. He upped and downed from the green side bunker for a par 3 to win by 2/1 and victory was secured. Ron Collie who was ahead early had a few putting problems on the back 9 and ultimately lost 4/2. The result was a win for Sussex but at times it was not as clear cut as it eventually proved. However, with two good wins the squad are in buoyant mood and we look forward to the Hampshire Match at Bognor on 22nd June.
