I'm very happy to report on a successful away win in our first League Match of the year at Effingham against Surrey.

Surrey produced what their County Secretary John Davies described as a better team than usual but nevertheless Sussex triumphed. The course was a difficult prospect with firm ground, a stiff wind and slick greens and matches fluctuated considerably.  After 8 holes 5 of the first 6 matches were all square and the match could have gone either way. As matters progressed it became evident that Peter Crowther in match 1 was losing momentum and ultimately went down 4/2.

The second and third matches were extremely tight with David Blundell, making his debut, eventually winning by 1 hole chipping in for a birdie 3 on 18. Mike Massie, making his second appearance, took on former British Welsh and Irish Seniors Champion the American John Baldwin and again in a very tight match Mike won by 1 hole. The momentum had changed and Dave Hicks, who was 3 down with 4 to play, managed to win 3 of the last 4 holes to gain an unexpected ½ and put Sussex in a strong position.

Martyn Thornhill, playing his first match, never looked behind and run out a 5/3 winner over former local player, Billy Mitchell. Nevill Hudson, again playing his first match, played very steadily against an erratic Jonathan Hubbard was never behind and won well 6/5. Malcolm Stalker in a critical match, where we needed at least ½ a point to tie, had an epic struggle with Chris Gotla, a talented Surrey player, and played the 18th brilliantly for a birdie 3 to win by 2 holes.

We now had sufficient holes and despite Hiddy Jahan losing on the 18th and Kerry Scott losing 3/2, Ron Collie in the battle of the oldies at the rear was never behind and run out a comfortable 5/4 winner over Pat Horkan. All in all a very satisfying start to the Season and a big thanks to all the players for the effort and commitment put in to achieve the result.

Hopefully we can move forward with further successes.
